One-Day AFMM Workshop

Microscopy and Microanalysis for Research and Development

Feb 24, 2025, A.V. Rama Rao Auditorium, Chemical Sciences Building (Second Floor), IISc

Empowering Students from Resource-Limited Institutions: A Step Towards Inclusive Research Opportunities: As we all know, many students from institutions with limited research facilities have made remarkable contributions to our nation. Their resilience, determination, and problem-solving mindset have laid the foundation for India’s top government institutions, research centers, PSUs, and national laboratories. Yet, the number of such students advancing further in research careers remains comparatively low, often limited by access to advanced resources and exposure.

With this vision, our team organized a special one-day microscopy workshop exclusively for students from resource-limited institutions. Thanks to generous sponsorship from Bruker, the event was made completely free of cost for all selected (300+) participants. We welcomed over 300 students from 20+ institutions across the country, ensuring no participation fee was collected. To preserve the focus of this initiative, students from premier institutes like IITs and IISc were intentionally excluded, thereby creating more opportunities for students from smaller universities and colleges where advanced microscopy tools are often unavailable.

This workshop was more than just a series of lectures; it was an immersive experience. Participants not only attended insightful technical sessions but also visited the National Microscopy Facility (AFMM – https://afmm.iisc.ac.in/). Here, my research group, in collaboration with the AFMM team, demonstrated cutting-edge microscopy equipment, offering hands-on exposure and personalized interactions.

This event stands as a meaningful example of our commitment to democratizing access to high-end research infrastructure and nurturing a new generation of scientists. By showcasing what is possible and guiding them towards future opportunities, we aim to empower these bright young minds to dream beyond limitations.“Dream big, work with passion, and remember – the size of your dreams must always exceed your current circumstances.”
