Five-Day Basic Microscopy Workshop

Basic Microscopy Workshop

Mar 4-8, 2025, TCS Smart X-Hub Building, Bengaluru, IISc

Building Capacity in the Next Generation of Scientists and Engineers Through Hands-On Microscopy Training: At the heart of impactful research lies not just access to advanced tools, but the knowledge and confidence to use them effectively. With this vision, Prof. Surendra, Prof. Pavan, and I collaboratively organized a highly focused five-day workshop designed to bridge the skill gap in advanced microscopy techniques for researchers across India.

This exclusive workshop was carefully curated for Non-IISc participants, selecting 66 participants through a rigorous process to ensure maximum impact and engagement. The participants represented a vibrant mix of expertise and backgrounds:

  • 18 scientists from DRDO labs (NPOL, MTRDC, STARC, NSTL, DMSRDE, DMRL, DRDO Gwalior)
  • 9 researchers from premier government labs (CGCRI, CSIR, ITER)
  • 35 Ph.D. scholars and postdoctoral researchers from IITs, NITs, and other reputed institutes
  • 4 engineers from leading industries

Workshop Overview: The workshop was structured to combine both theoretical insights and practical experience. The first day began with expert lectures from distinguished faculty members and professionals across various premier institutions. These sessions provided participants with a strong conceptual foundation in advanced microscopy techniques, applications, and best practices in materials characterization. Post-lunch on Day 1, and throughout the remaining four days, participants were divided into smaller groups for intensive hands-on training sessions at the Advanced Facility for Microscopy and Microanalysis (AFMM), a national-level, state-of-the-art microscopy facility. Here, under the mentorship of our team and AFMM experts, participants engaged directly with cutting-edge instruments, gaining invaluable experience in operating advanced electron microscopes and associated analysis techniques. This initiative reflects our group’s unwavering commitment to nurturing talent at all levels, from Ph.D. students and postdocs to seasoned scientists and engineers from government, academia, and industry. It was a rare and inspiring opportunity for participants to not only learn advanced tools but also build meaningful research collaborations. As a team, we firmly believe that knowledge shared is progress multiplied. It’s not just about using sophisticated tools but about creating opportunities for researchers from diverse backgrounds to dream, to learn, and to lead.
