Five-Day Advanced Microscopy Workshop

Advanced Microscopy Workshop

Mar 10-14, 2025, TCS Smart X-Hub Building, Bengaluru, IISc

Pioneering Advanced Microscopy Training for the Next Generation of Researchers: In our continued effort to strengthen India’s research ecosystem and support scientists working on cutting-edge materials characterization, our team, Prof. Surendra, Prof. Pavan, and I – successfully organized a highly focused five-day advanced microscopy workshop. What made this workshop unique was its selectivity and depth. We carefully shortlisted a limited number of participants from DRDO laboratories, IITs, CSIR labs, PSUs, and leading industries, all of whom already possessed a solid foundation and hands-on experience in microscopy techniques. This allowed us to design an intensive, technically rigorous program tailored for advanced users.

The workshop covered a comprehensive range of sophisticated topics, including:

  • Introduction to Aberration-Corrected Microscopy and STEM Techniques
  • Exit Wave Reconstruction and Phase Imaging
  • Spectroscopic Tools: STEM-EELS, EDS, 4D-STEM, and Advanced Detectors
  • In-situ and Operando Electron Microscopy for Real-Time Analysis
  • Atomic Probe Tomography (APT)
  • Tutorials on Image Processing, Simulation, and Data Analysis

This was one of the first (as per our knowledge) workshops within IISc to extensively cover advanced APT and high-resolution TEM tools in such a structured, hands-on format. It proved immensely valuable not only for researchers actively engaged in atomic-scale investigations but also inspired many young scientists to pursue further education and careers in advanced microscopy and materials characterization. The overwhelming response, insightful discussions, and collaborative environment reaffirmed the importance of such specialized, high-impact workshops. It stands as a testament to what can be achieved when experienced mentors and ambitious young researchers come together with a shared passion for scientific excellence.
